STEP 1: Installing Altair License Server

The Altair License Management System 14.0.2 software is available for download by registered customers from the Altair website through the Altair Client Center, http://www.altairhyperworks.com/clientcenter or through Altair Connect https://connect.altair.com.

Download the images for the platforms on which you expect to run the license manager and usage report system. If you plan to run the license manager and the usage report system on multiple servers, download the proper packages for all servers. Consult the following list to download the right package for your system.

STEP 2: Installing Altair License Server

MacOSX

  1. Launch the license server installation.
  2. Click on the lock icon and enter your administrator password.
  3. Proceed through the next few dialogs, entering information for the installation path.
  4. Click Next.
  5. If you have an existing server license file, choose Yes and enter the location of the license file (after finishing the installation, the license server will automatically start). If you do not have a license file, choose No, then click Next. We will proceed without a license file and add it later to the appropriate location.
  6. Review the installation directory and disk space information, and click Install.
  7. Click OK when the Information for obtaining a license file dialog appears.
  8. Click Done to close the license server installation

Windows

  1. Launch the license server installer.
  2. The Altair Licensing Installation window appears. Proceed through the next few dialogs, entering information for the installation path.
  3. Click Next.
  4. If you have an existing server license file, choose Yes and enter the location of the license file (after finishing the installation, the license server will automatically start). If you do not have a license file, choose No, then click Next. We will proceed without a license file and add it later to the appropriate location.
  5. Review the installation directory and disk space information, click Install.
  6. Click OK when the Information for obtaining a license file dialog appears.

Click Done to close the license server installation.

Step 3: Register the License Server

Option 1: Licensing Installation Package is on the License Server.

  1. Launch the License Wizard.
  2. Click the Register This will launch the solidThinking webpage where you can register to obtain a license via email.
  3. Once the license file has been emailed back to you, copy it to your desktop.

Option 2: Licensing Installation Package is on an Individual Mac Workstation.

  1. Open a terminal window and type the following command:

    /Applications/Altair/licensing13.2/bin/lmxendutil -hostid

  2. A list of HostIDs will appear. Copy the Long: System Serial
  3. Paste the Long: System Serial HostID into the HostID field on the license registration form which can be accessed at solidthinking.com/register9. Complete and submit this form to obtain your license file via email.

Option 3: Licensing Installation Package is on an Individual Windows Workstation

  1. Click on the Windows Start menu, browse to the Altair License Server 13.2 folder, and open the ALMUtil.
  2. The ALMUtil tool will appear and the first tab will read HostID.
  3. Copy the HARDDISK
  4. Paste the HARDDISK HostID into the HostID field on the license registration form which can be accessed at www.solidthinking.com/register9. Complete and submit this form to obtain your license file via email.

Step 4: Activate the Server License

MacOSX

  1. Rename the license file sent to you by solidThinking to altair_lic.dat.
  2. Drag and drop the license file into the server installation’s root directory using a Finder window (The default root directory location is /Applications/Altair/licensing13.2).
  3. Your system will ask you to Authenticate. Click Authenticate, then Replace and enter your password to complete the operation. This will overwrite the empty altair_lic.dat already found in that directory.
  4. From the same directory, open altair-serv.cfg in a text editor. Find the line that reads LICENSE_FILE = /Applications/Altair/licensing13.2.
  5. Add “altair_lic.dat” to the end of the line, then save the file. (It should read LICENSE_FILE =/Applications/Altair/licensing13.2/altair_lic.dat.)
  6. Open a Terminal window.
  7. In the Terminal window, type the following: (Terminals are case sensitive.)

    sudo bash <Enter> (you will be prompted for your root password) launchctl stop com.altair.lmx-serv <Enter> launchctl start com.altair.lmx-serv <Enter>

  8. The message “The Altair License Manager was successfully started” should appear.
  9. The message may take a few moments to appear in the terminal window.
  10. Open a new Terminal window while maintaining your original terminal window.
  11. Type the following status query to insure it is serving licenses: /Applications/Altair/licensing13.2/bin/ALMUtil –licstat <Enter>
  12. The command should return something similar to the license status shown below:

Windows

  1. Rename the license file sent to you by solidThinking to dat. (Make sure you are showing extensions for known file types.)
  2. Drag and drop the license file into the server installation’s root directory using Windows Explorer. (The default location is C:\Program Files\Altair\licensing13.2).This will overwrite the empty dat file already found in that directory.
  3. From the same directory, open altair-serv.cfg in a text editor. Find the line that reads LICENSE_FILE = C:\Program Files\Altair\licensing13.2\ECHO is off. Remove “ECHO is off.” and replace it with “altair_lic.dat,” then save the file.
  4. Click on the Windows Start Menu, browse to the Altair License Server 13.2 folder, and open ALMUtil.
  5. Click on the License Usage tab. You should see there are no licenses served by the license server.
  6. Click on the Windows Start Menu and type services into the programs search bar and click Enter. The Component Services dialog will appear.
  7. Click Services (Local) located at the bottom of the Console Root.
  8. Select the Altair License Server in the list of services and click Restart the service found to the left of the services list.
  9. Click on the License Usage tab and then click Refresh.

The server is now up and running. Users can now connect to the server by typing 6200@(your hostname or IP address) into their license wizard and selecting Connect to Server.

Step 5: Connect to a License Server

Before entering the port@host in License Wizard we first need to add a system variable. Follow the instructions based on your windows version.

After the license server has been configured and started correctly, you can connect from any client inside the network to the server address via 6200@“IPv4 of the server”. For example: 6200@192.168.100.5

  • Right-click the Computer icon on Desktop.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click on the Advanced system settings option.
  • Click Environment Variables… button and then on the New… button In System Variables.
  • Enter the following details:
    Variable Name: ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH
    Variable Value: port@host (e.g. 6200@192.168.100.5)
  • Click OK two times.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Go to System and Security > System.
  • Click on Advanced System Settings.
  • Click on the New… button In System Variables.
  • Enter the following details:
    Variable Name: ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH
    Variable Value: port@host (e.g. 6200@192.168.100.5)
  • Click OK two times.
  • Right-click on the Windows 10 start button.
  • Select System.
  • Click on Advanced System Settings.
  • Click on the New… button In System Variables.
  • Enter the following details:
    Variable Name: ALTAIR_LICENSE_PATH
    Variable Value: port@host (e.g. 6200@192.168.100.5)
  • Click OK two times
